Transit spaces, for example; railway stations, bus stops, tubes, airports, have become a core part of the city and people’s daily experiences. Such spaces are suggested as both ‘nodes’ and ‘places’ that provide connections between
transport and non-transport related areas. Environmental qualities in these transit spaces are increasingly drawn from various stakeholders.

Waiting experience in stations is vital when evaluating the environmental quality around them. New Street Station, a major project development at the heart of Birmingham city centre, changes the traditional experiences of waiting in railway stations.

Students investigate different types of waiting experiences, waiting spaces and seating in New Street Station through a number of site visits. Surveys, research diaries and measurements will be used to investigate the quality
of identified waiting spaces in the station. This investigation encourages new to thinking in the design of transient environments in relation to peoples’ behaviours, movements and experiences.

Questionnaire Results

We devised a questionnaire based on other studies into waiting areas as well as the results of our initial observation of the space. We received feedback from 20 respondents; we also video recorded interviews with 3 people. The findings are

Transit Spaces – Wayfinding

Following several site visits to New Street Station we have analysed the movement through the station. The centre core space is a junction of routes, its a busy area in which many users often come confused with the next step

In this first Co:Lab meeting we went through the aims of the project and what our intentions and outcomes are to be. We discussed what we believe a Transit Space to be, and what makes a successful and unsuccessful transit
