There are over 300,000 villages in China. A large number of these do not have adequate sanitation facilities or access to clean water. These villages are often small, remote settlements in hilly regions that have limited infrastructure and vehicle access. Water pollution is high and disease is a very real and serious issue for these residents. It is estimated that by 2030 over 150m people will leave such rural areas to find better lives in cities, which is turn is exacerbating the urbanisation problem.

Urban synthesis China and Choral Studio Ltd are currently working with the Local Authority in Zigong City, Sichuan to explore methods and models to improve the sanitation in these remote villages, alongside a general improvement of much needed community and culturally relevant amenity facilities.

Students researched the development of a replicable model of a decentralised sewage system and sustainable low technology infrastructure that can be installed into multiple village conditions by the villagers themselves requiring no special technology, materials or skills. On completion of the module students prepared a short report outlining the design and implementation of a single case study and how it can apply to differing contexts.

Students additionally set up a crowdfunding campaign and highlighted the plight of these rural settlements through a targeted marketing campaign – raising awareness to its problems but also highlighting how design can offer a transformative effect on these communities.

Not sure who should pay for it but think there’s a point in that about private sector involvement;
