Onto the design. Our research identified the importance of local builders and building techniques in remote community, which led us to design with concrete, masonry and timber as primary materials as all are common building materials in the villages. We based the numbers of the toilet block on the assumed population of the villages, approximately 1 toilet in 10 people, 24 toilets in total per village. The site we designed the prototype for is located in the North village on an un-occupied hill. Due to the steep gradient of the site the design of the toilet block follows the terrain and steps up per unit, overall there is a 5m level change in the site. The block follows the curve of the road to the West and provides security on this frontage, whilst opening out to the East onto a new communal space, initially designed as a garden but could easily be converted into a communal kitchen or gathering space.
