TITLE: Centrala Gallery & Cafe
LOCATION: Minerva Works, Digbeth, Birmingham
PROJECT TYPE: Design, Construction

Centrala is a new art facility located within a former industrial unit of Minerva Works. The 150m2 unit is converted into a cafe, bookshop, gallery, seminar room, 3 artist studios and office for the Polish Expats Association – the hosting organisation for the space.

layout concept

Polish Expats is a key non-profit organisation in the UK working to integrate the Polish community and promote Polish culture and heritage whilst supporting community cohesion. The space is divided along 2 main areas, with the gallery defined by new internal partitions and freestanding structures either end as the cafe and office respectively.

A simple material palette was selected with a distinctive play on colour and texture that takes reference from regional vernaculars of Polish architecture. All materials were sourced locally and reclaimed where possible. The freestanding structures are designed with increased insulated walls, improving its capacity to reduce energy consumption when in use.
