LOCATION: The Public, West Brom
CLIENT: The Public,  Will Alsop
PROJECT TYPE: curation, exhibition design, fabrication

The Public approached Birmingham School of Architecture students to collaborate with the Stirling Prize winner, Will Alsop on his Box of Delights exhibition, to create an environment designed to make us think about architecture and how it makes us feel.

The Public is a creative and business centre in the heart of West Bromwich, specialising in interactive displays and community based art projects to raise the aspirations for the residents of the city.

Students from the M.Arch postgraduate course worked with the curators at The Public and Will Alsop to develop their own artworks – responding to the unique interior of the building using interactive and digital displays to execute their ideas. From this initial outcome, the students then worked with Graham Peet, Exhibitions Manager, to design and construct a physical installation as part of an on-going programme of temporary works.

The students constructed a faceted paper wall that can move in a wave formation with a bespoke crank mechanism. The piece aims to entice visitors with an engaging and dynamic piece using a combination of digital fabrication and traditional craft of origami.

The collaboration supported the Public’s philosophy to engage with the wider community as well as supporting the curator, Will Alsop and guest exhibitors to harness a fresh perspective on how the unique space could be experienced.
