Innovative Urban Lighting – Group 1 | Week 9 | Development using a computer model

We started the session with experimenting with an external structure to our product, we used cardboard to incase the product, we considered an internal structure but wanted to reference the woof off the lock gates in our product. There are a collection of images below that show our design process and experimentation with the external structure of our product.


After using cardboard to finalise the shape of the wooden structure, a 3d model of the design was created using Revit. This was made in order to check the measurements of each of the wooden sides before they were laser cut. It also helped to refine the design further, to see how the edges would work in a more accurate way than was possible with the cardboard model.

During this step, a decision was made to also vary the thickness of the wooden pieces in 1cm increments, to add more variety and as a way to guide the eye towards the canal. We decided to try the wooden frame at a thickness of 6mm, using the maximum thickness of the materials available in the workshop.




We then took the model to the photography studio for some better images of our product.   also to test how our 1:1 prototype would work with the lights we were going to use. These pictures can be found below.
