Abstract Drawing Workshop

Ran by Nathan this workshop was designed to essentially `free` us up from any ridged drawing practices we already adopt.  From an architectural standpoint this seemed slightly alien but actually turned out to be an enjoyable experience which allowed me to quickly sketch without worrying too much about proportions and perspectives.

There seemed to be a scrappy approach to the drawings and their techniques which demanded quick fast thinking sketching. This was in no way a bad thing as it allowed us to be care free and just draw. In architecture I think that we might try to be too precise with our drawing and aim to make use of space on the sheet as best we can. Although against everyone’s conscience, the use of paper was made out to not be an issue and to use as much as required, starting a new sheet for every drawing adding to this care free approach. With these restrictions clearly removed it allowed you to focus on the form of what we are trying to recreate and worry less about other things unimportant to the task.

The Warm Up. This was a simple exercise to  loosen us up  through the shouting of random numbers to draw between.

This image was a team effort with me drawing the outline of the 2 models and a fashion student providing the texture.

Using a contouring process we produced this image. The contours over the body suggest the 3d form in a different way to the 3 tone approach previously.

From my point of view this led to surprising results. From not really testing myself on this kind of thing previously I didn’t know what to expect. They were better than I thought they would be and I’d suggest that its evident from the 1^st drawing to the last few that they began to get better. Getting used to drawing in this manner would certainly help the architecture student with concept sketches.
