TITLE: Memorial for the Curzon Italian Quarter
LOCATION: Eastside, Birmingham
COLLABORATORS: Friends of Eastside Community Park
PROJECT TYPE: Community Participation, Design Feasibility

This commission developed a design proposal for a permanent memorial located in Eastside Park in commemoration for the Italian Community that were once housed in the area in the early 20th Century.

Co.LAB students participated in a number of consultation events with members of the Italian families that have now been displaced all over the country. Understanding the local history and their heritage was key to interpreting design ideas fitting for the area.

Communities were unified in courtyards by the back-to-back terraces on Bartholomew Row. The final design took this urban typology and reduced its scale to a series of enclaves for people to sit and meet. The blocks are designed to be made from terrazzo, drawing on the expertise of the families that completed a lot of similar work in many of the City’s key buildings.

The collaborators are now looking for funding to progress the project to realise the construction.
