Category Archives: Zero Carbon Design & Retrofit

.
This project takes strategies in zero carbon design through retrofit or new construction using simulation software to test
certain parameters. This process allows the optimisation of a design to achieve a zero-carbon target in energy efficiency.

Students have explored a number of themes to base their investigation on:
• Thermal Mass: The relationship between thermal
• Mass and occupancy schedules.
• Building Fabric: Insulation and glazing with
• Consideration to internal space
• Regaining thermal mass after internal insulation:
• Day Lighting: achieving a balance between saving
• Energy and minimizing heat loss
• Low Carbon Technologies
• Occupant’s profiles: Scenarios of different types of
• Users with varied energy consumptions

The following posts highlight different stages to their work.

Zero Carbon Design, a reflection of taught progress

Zero Carbon Design, explores how the use of Integrated Environmental Solutions software can be used and applied to new and existing building models, to produce accurate simulations of thermal and solar properties, and allow us to adjust the model to

Victorian House Our first experiment was to look at making an existing model zero carbon. In the form of a Victorian House, below are the systematic steps we took to achieve this; 1. Wall Construction 2. Roof Insulation 3. Glazing
