The Brick Assembly project enables groups of students to study the real life manufacture of clay products. Special shaped bricks, such as Ibstock’s Umbra range, offer designers the opportunity to explore relief in the creation of brick surfaces. This apparently simple creation of form using the mouldable properties of clay relies on careful manipulation of the raw material and consideration of how the final product could be used.

Students plan to investigate the process of special shape brick manufacture developing a working process as they develop a new prototype using clay. They will use the workshop facilities at Parkside to explore the potential of both material and various processes. A site visit to an Ibstock Brick factory site is planned to allow comparison with current brick manufacturing processes.
