Construction of two significant modernist buildings in Birmingham, Alpha Tower by H. George Marsh and Birmingham Central Library by John Madin. Both recognised as buildings of a high quality and architectural significance.
In 2002 Alpha Tower failed to get listed status by Historic England after being nominated by the Twentieth Century Society. Attempt to list Central Library was equally unsuccessful, which consequently led to its demolition. Alpha Tower survived do to Birmingham City Council’s initiative and local protection status. The building was then listed by National Heritage in July 2014.
