Session 3
Today we looked at the design of the map and began discussions on what we include and what we don’t. At the minute we have a long list of 93 buildings however the maps we have examined so far have an average of 50 therefore should we print 50 in the psychical map but feature more online? Or should we have a call out map to show the buildings. On top of that the locations of some brutalist buildings are further out from the centres compared to others such as Dudley Zoo. How could we encourage people to go out of town to look at these buildings? Another significant point is the buildings which have been demolished such as the central library? This evokes thoughts of the city and why certain buildings are staying but others are being lost. It also allows you to examine the site and to see what used to stand their compared to what does now and encourage a thought and opinion of your own especially if you are a visitor to the city of Birmingham.
How early should we date back too? Previously we spoke about the Brealey street school being the real start of modernist architecture.
To date we have 11 special mentions that we believe are key and need to be featured, as a member of the illustration team we need to look into how to show this 1/5 of the buildings can be shown as special and how to show them on the map, do we have black and white? Do we have close ups? Do we show people? Do we just show the close ups of a special feature? This what we need to consider next and by looking at the special 11 gives us a good place to start.
Simon Phipps is the photographer on the Brutalist London Map which demonstrates a nice way to photograph the buildings. I personally like the way he zooms in certain features and the angles he takes the photos. This is an example of his work, the Hayward Gallery, Tinbergen Building, Wyndham Building are just some examples of this work.
