TITLE: FutureHouse Zero Carbon
LOCATION: Moseley, Birmingham
COLLABORATORS: Private clients
PROJECT TYPE: Research & Development, Environmental Simulation
Co.LAB is working with Prof. Lubo Jankovic and PhD candidate Purvesh Bharadwaj to undertake an early scoping study on the viability of turning shipping containers into functioning homes with a zero-carbon footprint.
The configuration of containers and material assembly to weatherproof the structure are some of the parameters to consider. The ambition is to define a construction process that is affordable as well as exceeding legislative guidelines and spatial standard for new build dwellings.
We are able to use the expertise of academic staff and PhD students on the MA Zero Carbon Design and Retrofit programme after initial collaborations between students on the MA and postgraduate architecture students.
The client is hopeful this research can inform their final design decisions in order to set the standard as a possible model for contemporary new-build homes that can ease the pressure on Local Authorities with significant housing shortage.
