TITLE: Hidden Spaces Exhibition

Co.LAB was approached by Associated Architects to work on a high profile event to launch an exhibition of Birmingham Hidden Spaces, originally conceived as a newspaper supplement in the Birmingham Post.
On show was to be a series of rare photographs of some of Birmingham’s most treasured buildings – many of which do not have public access. The event was located at the old Curzon Street Station building, the world’s oldest monumental railway structure. It provided an opportunity for members of the public to gain access to such a unique venue whilst being able to view all the other buildings photographed.
Students on the BA (Hons) Architecture programme participated in the project as part of the end of year school events. Three groups of first and second years worked collaboratively to develop initial ideas. The groups were mentored in two separate sessions with the team at Associated Architects, before defining a final design proposal for fabrication.
The exhibition was created as a series of smaller spaces, amongst the building’s cavernous rooms, with a bespoke modular system of solid and slatted screens. Once arranged, the formation of the two types of screens generates interesting views along the full length of the space, and offers brief glimpses towards the next set of photographs.
A special projection booth demonstrated a specially commissioned video by film maker Rich Green. The structure made references to architectural features of the Municipal Bank – one of the buildings presented in the show.
