Projects will be integrated within the teaching curriculum for a year with a dedicated group of students and allocated member of staff working on it. It is expected that the client will actively engage with the students on a infrequent basis. Typically, the scale of the projects are small-medium with adequate complexity for further research into specific areas to achieve the desired outcome.
Examples: design and construction for small structures, museum/gallery installations, masterplanning with local authorities, organisiation and curation of workshops/public engagement, publications.
2. Design-led Research/Strategic Studies:
These projects require a more investigative response. The outcome may not necessarily be physical but can take in the form of a report. There will be a select number of students and academics with specific expertise working with the client. It is expected that there will be a strong collaborative approach with frequent communication. The timescale is more flexible and not restricted to the academic calendar. Further collaboration could include funded research bids and Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs).
Examples: Business models, spatial strategies and internal organisation, environmental investigation, technical design development, technical exploration, component research + development, archive/historical research.
Partners/collaborators will have a very specific project with a technical or design based requirement. Co.LAB can provide adequate advice on suitable solutions to proceed with on the client’s own terms. An approved graduate, supported by a member of staff, will work closely with the client on projects which will likely be relatively small in scale.
Should a client want to proceed with the consultancy further to more detailed design and construction, Co.LAB can coordinate the graduate to work with an approved architectural practice to provide technical and administrative support.
Examples: permitted developments, feasibility studies, visualisation/illustration, model making, design charrettes/reviews.
